Rheinmetall Unveils Revolutionary SSW40 Grenade Launcher in Live-Fire Debut

German defense manufacturer Rheinmetall has showcased its next-generation Squad Support Weapon 40 (SSW40) during a live-fire event at the Unterlüß proving ground, marking a major innovation in infantry firepower. The SSW40 is the world’s first shoulder-fired, magazine-fed automatic grenade launcher designed specifically for 40mm x 46 medium velocity (MV) rounds—a significant leap in range, firepower, and versatility for dismounted troops.

Unlike conventional grenade launchers, the SSW40 delivers assault rifle-like handling in a compact, four-kilogram platform, just 80 centimeters in length. Its modular, ambidextrous design includes a dual-purpose safety and mag-release control, an upper bolt catch, and a break-barrel switch for ease of loading. Maintenance is also streamlined with a disassembly lever located at the rear of the receiver. The cocking mechanism is integrated into the shoulder stock, preserving ergonomics and balance.

The key advancement of the SSW40 lies in its ability to fire programmable airburst munitions—offering precision against defilade targets—and its compatibility with longer grenades approaching the capabilities of high-velocity 40mm x 53mm rounds. The MV rounds provide greater speed, longer range, and increased terminal effects compared to traditional low-velocity grenades, without sacrificing recoil control or mobility.

In the demonstration, Rheinmetall set up steel targets from 100 to 500 meters, along with a derelict vehicle at 250 meters to simulate urban combat. Attendees first used legacy low-velocity launchers, then transitioned to the SSW40 for comparison, all firing Target Practice Marker-Tracer (TPM-T) rounds. The results clearly highlighted the SSW40’s superior accuracy, ease of handling, and minimal felt recoil—thanks to its self-regulating hydropneumatic recoil system.

Operators reported that the launcher handled more like a heavy rifle than a traditional grenade launcher, with the integrated Aimpoint red-dot sight enabling quick target acquisition at varied distances. Minimal adjustment was needed for range estimation, and the smooth trigger break further enhanced hit probability.

With its game-changing performance, the SSW40 redefines the role of the infantry grenadier—bringing a new level of firepower, accuracy, and tactical flexibility to the squad level in modern combat environments.
