ERYX: Compact and Lethal Short-Range Anti-Tank Missile System

The ERYX is a short-range, wire-guided anti-tank missile system developed by MBDA, a leading European defense manufacturer. Designed through a joint effort between France and Canada in 1989, the ERYX entered service in 1994 and has since been adopted by several countries, including France, Canada, Norway, Turkey, and Brazil. The system is primarily intended for infantry use against armored vehicles, bunkers, and fortifications, and in certain scenarios, it can also be employed against low-flying helicopters.

Design and Capabilities

The ERYX uses a Semi-Automatic Command to Line of Sight (SACLOS) guidance system and transmits steering commands via a thin wire connected to the missile. After launch, the operator must keep the crosshairs on the target; the system automatically adjusts the missile’s path to ensure it hits accurately. This technology, while relatively simple and robust, allows for high hit probability even in dense or urban environments.

Key technical features:

  • Weight: 10.2 kg (13 kg with launcher, missile weighs 4.5 kg)
  • Length: 0.905 meters
  • Range: Effective up to 600 meters
  • Speed: 245 m/s, covering 600 meters in approximately 4.3 seconds
  • Warhead: Tandem HEAT (High-Explosive Anti-Tank), designed to defeat reactive armor by using a precursor charge followed by a main penetrator

The missile is propelled by a low-velocity rocket motor, enabling it to be fired safely in confined spaces—a critical advantage in urban warfare. To maintain directional stability, it uses two rear-mounted exhaust ports for steering correction during flight.

Combat Testing and Deployment

In MBDA’s extensive testing—1,000 test firings—the ERYX system demonstrated a 95% hit probability, showcasing its effectiveness and reliability. Despite its solid performance on paper, the system faced mixed reception in some countries. For instance, Turkey’s Land Forces Command deemed the missile unsuccessful during trials, although it has remained in limited service since 2009.

Global Operators

  • Current Users:
    • France
    • Canada
    • Norway
    • Turkey
    • Brazil
    • Malaysia
  • Former User:
    • Italy (1999–2004)

With over 4,600 units produced, the ERYX continues to serve as a compact and potent tool for infantry units facing armored threats, especially in environments where maneuverability and confined-space effectiveness are crucial. Its straightforward design, tandem warhead, and wire-guided precision make it a valuable asset in modern asymmetric warfare.
